Position Summary
The Development Director is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive fund development and engagement plan for the organization. Within this role, developing and maintaining meaningful relationships is key to ensuring the agency’s visibility and financial strength. The position will be directly responsible for successfully creating, leading and implementing an integrated communications and resource development strategy. This strategy will focus on two key objectives: implementing a multifaceted communications and outreach strategy targeted to funders, donors, Board, volunteers, media, and constituents, and developing new donor and partner relationships, while maintaining existing ones to build the organization's visibility, impact, and financial resources. This individual will be responsible for leveraging public and private funds to support EarlystART’s initiatives and leading the development and implementation of organization-wide strategies to increase the fundraising capacity.
The Development Director is a member of the Executive Team and works together with the CEO and members of the Board of Directors to provide strategic leadership for fundraising and communications and serves as the executive leader of the Resource Development Team.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Resource Development:
- Supervision of Resource Development team members (grant writing, corporate engagement, storytelling/communications, and donor data management).
- Responsible for leading the creation and implementation of a comprehensive fund development plan annually with key input from the Board of Directors and Executive Team.
- Lead the efforts to increase revenues annually through corporate, individual, and foundations funding and/or state or federal grants.
- Identify and implement new revenue streams and fundraising methods, with focus on increasing sustainable unrestricted, private revenue.
- Grow and diversify volunteer/service opportunities and in-kind donations that are relevant to the mission of the organization.
- Identify grant opportunities with the Resource Development team and relevant staff. Grant writing responsibility is shared among staff depending on the program and policy area, and not the sole responsibility of this position.
- Partner with the CEO, Executive Team, and Board to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters as well as maintain and strengthen existing relationships.
- Evaluate and drive the use of new technology communications, marketing, and funding vehicles including social media and eGiving, leveraging the organization’s website and online tools.
- Plan and evaluate financial needs and fundraising plans for the organization's future.
- Partner with the Finance and Accounting staff to sustain efficient, effective, and transparent financial tracking and reporting processes.
Communications and Marketing:
- Work with the CEO and Board on public relations and marketing to increase knowledge and awareness of EarlystART, its mission, activities, and the value of its work.
- Oversee the implementation of the multifaceted communications strategy, including use of electronic mail, EarlystART Website, social media platforms, print, digital, broadcast media, and presentations to disseminate EarlystART programs and services as well as related reports and messaging on early childhood development.
- Lead brand strategy, brand voice, marketing/staff recruitment and enrollment material development.
Leadership:
- Attend Board meetings and Board committee meetings and report on development activities as needed, in coordination with the CEO
- Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization as needed, and articulate our mission to external constituents, partner organizations, and potential funders.
- Work with the CEO to ensure Board members are engaged and energized by their association with the organization, and provide information as needed to board members on donor cultivation and fundraising techniques.
- Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Operations to develop and produce regular analytic reports for the CEO and Board of Directors that synthesize the financial progress and trends of fundraising activities.
- Partnership with the Director of Human Resources on matters of organizational culture, employee recruitment and retention.
- Other Development and organizational departmental duties, as assigned, including Development event assistance and proofing of storytelling content, annual gratitude reports, and outreach materials.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Communications, English, or Journalism with 5-7 years of related experience; comparable years of experience will be considered.
- Detail-oriented and capable of multi-tasking and managing various projects simultaneously; able to consistently meet project deadlines.
- Assertive, strategic, creative; able to plan and execute communications/outreach calendar.
- Excellent writer and verbal communicator.
- Experience in special events (fundraising, family engagement) and grassroots fundraising efforts. Extended experience as a nonprofit volunteer is a bonus.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups in a culturally competent manner.
- Ability to articulate the vision, goals, and activities of the organization in order to inspire participation.
- Proficient with modern, relevant software programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Keynote. Experience with Bloomerang or another similar donor management software is preferred.
- Ability to exercise initiative, work independently, and collaborate with others.
- Available to work some evenings/weekends, in support of EarlystART fundraising and community events.
