Community Engagement Specialist
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
The primary role of the Community Engagement Specialist is to provide KC STEM Alliance programs with volunteer support across programs. As an independent initiative of the UMKC School of Science and Engineering, the mission of the KC STEM Alliance is, together with our partners, to inspire and interest in science, technology, engineering, and math careers to generate a robust workforce. The Community Engagement Specialist works in partnership across the KC STEM team to support STEM education events with community and volunteer engagement by building a more robust volunteer network and community. This role reports directly to the Executive Director.
DUTIES
- Building relationships with KC STEM volunteers and the larger community around STEM
- Recruit and communicate with volunteers across programs
- Build a more robust, diverse, and engaged volunteer/mentor network
- Support FIRST Volunteer Coordinators, possibly meeting with key volunteers
- Maintain a robust understanding of programs in order to knowledgeably communicate organizational needs.
- Maintain volunteer database and respond to data requests
- Communicate with volunteers and community to build awareness of programs and opportunities in various ways, including but not limited to, newsletters, email, flyers, social media, etc.
- Seek out STEM ecosystem events and maintain a community STEM calendar
- Serve as the regional lead for Remake Learning Days, including planning and executing a KC STEM signature event that delivers programming designed to engage the broader STEM ecosystem
- Consistently collaborate and communicate with KC STEM staff and community partners to increase awareness of STEM programs and events while advancing STEM education initiatives
- Build and sustain alumni engagement opportunities
- Partner with KC STEM staff to promote STEM programs and events, driving community and volunteer engagement
- Develop and execute volunteer appreciation

- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with all KC STEM stakeholders
- Sense of urgency
- Team-oriented; ability to work with and support a fast-paced, highly functioning team
- Desire to learn and maintain knowledge of how KC STEM Alliance supports local education and the local STEM ecosystem
- A passion for creating STEM access for all students
- Proficient in the use of personal computers, office productivity software, and common business computer technologies (e.g., Windows, Word, Excel, printers, copiers, and scanners, email), Canva, newsletter platforms, and the like
- Basic graphic design skills may be helpful, but not necessary
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Ability to multitask to complete a wide variety of tasks and projects
- Attention to detail to ensure tasks are completed thoroughly and correctly
- Collaborative problem solving by seeking input and ideas from others
- Ability to function without close supervision.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
QUALFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required
COMPENSATION
$50,000-$60,000
This is a contract position and does not come with benefits.
