Location:  Agency office in North Kansas City, MO (50%); Virtual (up to 50% as requested)


Organizational Overview:
Asylum Clinic KC is a mission-driven nonprofit that provides pro bono legal assistance to migrants and immigrants who cannot afford to hire an immigration attorney, including unaccompanied minors, Afghans, and other noncitizens who are survivors of a crime or human trafficking, and asylum seekers in both Missouri and Kansas.
Historically funded by federal grants, Asylum Clinic KC anticipates losing all government funding by July 2026 and is seeking a development professional to build the fundraising capacity to sustain the $1 million agency for the long run.

Position Summary:
The Director of Development and Marketing is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategy to support an annual philanthropy goal of $1 million. This senior-level role oversees all aspects of fund development, including major gifts, annual giving, grants, special events, donor stewardship, and communications. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on implementer, able to collaborate with the agency’s program attorneys, while operating independently to deliver fundraising / marketing results for the organization.  They will have strong communication and relationship-building skills and a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising and marketing.

Key Responsibilities:
Development (80%)
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising plan to meet or exceed the $1 million philanthropy goal.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, including prospect research and personalized engagement strategies.
  • Oversee grant writing, reporting, and compliance.
  • Lead the planning and execution of fundraising events, including sponsorships and donor cultivation.  Design and implement a Signature Fundraising Event for the organization.
  • Manage donor database (Bloomerang) to ensure accurate records and data-driven fundraising decisions.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Clinic Administrator, and Board to engage them in development strategies and activities.
 
Marketing & Communications (20%)
  • Develop and implement a strategic marketing and communications plan to increase visibility, brand awareness, and donor engagement.
  • Create and distribute clear, compelling content across digital and print platforms (e.g., newsletters, website, social media, press releases, annual reports).
  • Ensure consistent and mission-aligned messaging across all channels.
  • Lead efforts to communicate impact to donors, stakeholders, and the broader community.
  • Implement media relations and PR initiatives.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit fundraising and marketing.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, foundation grants, and sponsorships.
  • Proven ability to meet fundraising goals.
  • Strong writing, storytelling, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience managing marketing and communication strategies, including digital and social media.
  • Proficiency in donor management software
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an intense, mission-driven environment.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience working with or reporting to a nonprofit Board of Directors.
