Staff Attorney

Legal Aid of Western Missouri seeks a full-time staff attorney for its St Joseph, Missouri, office to assist with housing and consumer cases.  The St. Joseph office represents clients in Buchanan County and seventeen other outlying rural counties in Northwest Missouri.
 
The duties include:
 

  • Representation of low-income individuals in housing and consumer matters, including:
    • Client interviewing and counseling
    • Negotiation with opposing parties
    • Collaboration with other agencies on behalf of our clients
    • Advocacy in litigation from inception through trial
    • Economic and consumer development work
  • Supervision and collaboration with paralegals
  • Case supervision
  • Community outreach
  • Developing relationships wit other agencies and organizations in service to our clients
  • Assistance with grant monitoring and compliance, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.  
 
The qualified candidate must have the following:
  • Active Missouri bar license
  • A desire to advocate on behalf of low-income and vulnerable individuals.

  • An entrepreneurial and creative approach to identifying and addressing issues faced by clients in the communities we serve.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues.

  • Proficiency in office software and applications, including virtual platforms for communication.
  • Ability to speak a second language, preferred, but not required. 
  • Courtroom experience, preferred. 
 
 
Pay Range: $65,000 to $90,000 depending on experience.
