Chief Technology Officer

Reports To: President & CEO Classification: Full-Time, Exempt
Salary Range: $144,500-$152,500
About KCPBS:
KCPBS is Kansas City’s public media station, committed to informing, inspiring, and enriching our community through trusted journalism, compelling storytelling, and innovative technology. We are seeking a visionary Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead our transformation into a fully digital, multi-platform broadcast operation.
Position Summary:
As CTO, you will be a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all technical operations, including engineering, IT, and broadcast infrastructure. You will drive innovation, ensure FCC compliance, and lead the strategic transition to digital and automated systems—all while managing a talented team and aligning technology with KCPBS’s mission and financial resources.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage engineering and IT departments, setting strategic goals and ensuring operational excellence.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive digital transformation blueprint.
• Oversee procurement, systems integration, and infrastructure upgrades.
• Ensure FCC compliance and manage license renewals.
• Troubleshoot technical issues and maintain high-quality broadcast standards.
• Collaborate with union staff and HR on labor agreements.
• Respond to viewer technical inquiries.
• Maintain and improve broadcast systems, including transmitter sites.
• Manage IT networks, server platforms, and emerging technologies.
• Support studio production and traffic operations.
• Oversee facility maintenance and mail services.
• Provide staff training, development, and performance evaluations.
• Prepare and manage technical grants, including PTFP.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in television technology or engineering.
• At least 5 years in a leadership/management role.
• 3–5 years of experience in computer and network systems management.
• Deep knowledge of FCC broadcast regulations.
• Experience with PTFP grant writing is a plus.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to be on-call for emergencies.
