Public Policy and Advocacy Stategist

Position Summary
The Public Policy and Advocacy Strategist will direct Harvesters’ public policy and advocacy strategy at the local, state (Kansas and Missouri), and federal levels. This role is responsible for advancing policies that strengthen nutrition programs, protect access to food assistance, and elevate the voices of neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The Strategist will design and direct Harvesters’ advocacy agenda, build and steward relationships with policymakers and partners, and develop a cohort of neighbors with lived experience who are trained and supported to advocate for effective nutrition policies. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, well-versed writer, and fearless public speaker who can translate complex policy into compelling stories and action.
Qualifications
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, social work, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in public policy, advocacy, government relations, or a related field, preferably within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated experience working on state and/or federal policy issues.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy into clear, compelling content.
  • Confidence and comfort with public speaking, facilitation, and media engagement.
  • Experience building relationships with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, coalition partners, and community members.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and centering lived experience in advocacy work.
Preferred
  • Experience working on hunger, nutrition, health, or anti-poverty policy.
  • Familiarity with Kansas and Missouri legislative processes.
  • Experience developing or managing advocacy programs that engage people with lived experience.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.

Salary Range: $50,000 - 74,999
