About The Dogwood House

The Dogwood House is a faith-based nonprofit in the Kansas City metro focused on providing transitional housing and independent living support for women rebuilding their lives after trafficking, exploitation, and trauma.

Our mission is to create a safe, dignified place where women can continue moving forward after completing long-term recovery programs — bridging the gap between recovery and full independence.

We are currently building a strong founding Board of Directors composed of experienced, mission-driven leaders who are passionate about restoration, strategic growth, and sustainable impact.


Position Overview

The Survivor Advocacy & Trauma-Informed Board Member serves as a strategic voice for trauma-informed care, survivor-centered practices, and ethical program development within the organization.

As part of the founding board, this role will help shape organizational values, program philosophy, and community impact through a lens of dignity, safety, and long-term restoration.

This role is ideal for a compassionate and thoughtful leader who is passionate about helping build a mission-driven organization that prioritizes both accountability and survivor well-being.


Responsibilities

  • Provide insight on trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices
  • Support ethical and restorative program development
  • Help strengthen organizational awareness surrounding survivor needs and long-term stability
  • Assist with community partnerships and advocacy efforts
  • Serve as an ambassador for The Dogwood House within the community
  • Support strategic planning and organizational growth efforts
  • Collaborate with Board leadership and the Executive Director on mission alignment and program development

Ideal Experience

Preferred candidates may have experience in:

  • Survivor advocacy or anti-trafficking work
  • Trauma-informed care or mental health services
  • Social work, counseling, or case management
  • Nonprofit leadership or community advocacy
  • Program development or restorative support services

Prior board experience is preferred but not required.


Expectations

Board members are expected to:

  • Attend regular board meetings
  • Serve as active ambassadors for the organization
  • Participate in fundraising and strategic growth efforts
  • Make an annual personal financial contribution
  • Support the mission and values of The Dogwood House
