Role and Responsibilities for Community Support Specialist
Position Overview: As a Community Support Specialist (CSS) specializing in behavioral health and/or substance use disorders (SUDs) with a focus on criminal justice referrals, CSS will serve as a crucial link connecting vulnerable individuals with essential resources. This Qualified Mental Health Professional will work to empower and uplift those at the intersection of mental health challenges and legal involvement, ensuring they receive the support and services necessary for holistic well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Assessment and Case Management:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients referred from the criminal justice system, taking into account their mental health needs, risk factors, and social circumstances.
Collaborate with other professionals, including probation officers, attorneys, and judges, to develop individualized and comprehensive care plans.
Utilize Sandra Bloom’s SELF model, cognitive behavioral therapy interventions, and other evidence-based practices.
Advocacy and Support:
Advocate for clients’ rights and access to mental health services within the criminal justice context, ensuring adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics.
Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and practical assistance during court appearances, probation meetings, and other legal proceedings.
Foster a supportive and empowering environment, encouraging client participation in goal setting and decision-making.
Navigation Coordination:
Facilitate navigation to mental health treatment providers, substance use programs, housing services, and vocational training.
Ensure seamless transitions between incarceration, community reentry, and ongoing mental health care.
Leverage Community Care Linc to assess, track, and coordinate services.
Psychoeducation:
Educate clients about mental health conditions, coping strategies, and relapse prevention.
Promote awareness of available community resources and self-help tools.
Collaboration with Stakeholders:
Work closely with law enforcement, correctional facilities, parole officers, and community organizations.
Attend multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss client progress and address any challenges.
Facilitate collaboration with the SAVE KC Services Committee and Partners for Peace to enhance service delivery.
Crisis Intervention:
Respond promptly to mental health crises, including suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, self-harm, or acute distress.
Implement safety plans and coordinate emergency services as needed.
Utilize trauma-responsive practices to ensure client safety and well-being.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client interactions, progress, and outcomes using the SIRP note format.
Prepare detailed reports for court hearings, parole boards, and treatment providers, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and confidentiality.
Conduct regular reviews of progress and adjust interventions as necessary.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related human services field (Master’s preferred), as per the Missouri Department of Health’s January 18, 2024, memorandum on Workforce Consolidation and Reorganization of Behavioral Health Professionals.
Relevant experience working with individuals involved in the criminal justice system and the social work field.
Certification or credentialing to provide services within the scope of practice preferred
Strong communication skills, empathy, and cultural competence.
Ability to navigate complex systems and build collaborative relationships.
Knowledge of local resources and community-based services.
