Position Overview
Center of Grace is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Director of Development & Engagement to lead our fundraising, community engagement, communications, and volunteer strategies. This senior leadership role will be responsible for advancing the organization’s financial sustainability, strengthening our brand and storytelling, and deepening relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners.
The Director of Development & Engagement will work closely with the Executive Director to lead organizational growth through fundraising, marketing, communications, and volunteer management. This role will guide strategic revenue development - including grants, major gifts, events, and donor stewardship - while also overseeing communications initiatives that share Center of Grace’s impact with the community. Additionally, this position will strengthen volunteer engagement, support organizational capacity-building, and serve as senior leader in the Executive Director’s absence.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Development & Fundraising Leadership
- Develop and execute an annual fundraising and development strategy to sustain and grow organizational revenue.
- Lead donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition initiatives across funding streams including grants, major gifts, sponsorships, and individual giving.
- Manage grant calendar, applications, and reporting.
- Lead planning and execution of fundraising campaigns and events.
- Oversee donor database management and ensure timely acknowledgments and reporting.
- Serve as staff lead and partner to the Development Committee, providing strategy, support, reports, planning guidance, and collaboration.
Communications & Marketing
- Lead branding, messaging, and storytelling to communicate the mission and impact of Center of Grace.
- Develop and manage marketing and communication strategies across website, newsletters, social media, and print materials.
- Ensure consistent, mission-centered messaging that reflects Center of Grace’s values and impact.
- Build relationships with media partners and communications stakeholders.
- Work in partnership with the Communications & Marketing Committee, delegating appropriate tasks while ensuring alignment, collaboration, and consistency in messaging, campaign execution, and public engagement strategies.
Volunteer Engagement & Community Relationships
- Oversee volunteer strategy including recruitment, scheduling, appreciation, and retention efforts.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with program coordinators and community volunteers.
- Strengthen partnerships with supporters, churches, civic groups, corporate partners, and community organizations.
- Represent Center of Grace at community events, speaking engagements, and partner gatherings.
- Lead implementation of volunteer tracking software – Bloomerang Volunteer.
- Partner with and support the Volunteer Administration Committee, collaborating to shape volunteer strategy, engagement initiatives, and overall volunteer experience.
Organizational Leadership
- Serve on the leadership team and collaborate on organizational planning, budgeting, and strategy.
- Develop relationships with members of COG’s Board of Directors; engage board members in the cultivation and stewardship of prospective and active donors.
- Serve as acting organizational lead in the Executive Director’s absence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Heart for the mission of Center of Grace
- 5+ years fundraising experience with demonstrated success in grant writing, major gifts and donor stewardship
- Established relationships and knowledge of the Kansas City philanthropic community
- Strong writing, storytelling, and communication skills.
- Strong technical aptitude including experience with donor management systems (CRM), volunteer tracking software, and digital communication tools; ability to quickly learn and implement new technology solutions
- Experience in communications, marketing, or public relations preferred.
- Leadership experience and ability to oversee projects and people.
- Strong organizational, planning, and data management skills.
Position Details
- Full-time, salaried, exempt leadership role
- Reports to the Executive Director
- Primarily on-site with community engagement responsibilities
- Occasional evenings or weekends required for events
Salary Range
$70,000 - $80,000 based on relevant experience
