Executive Director
The Johnson County Bar Association (JCBA) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Executive Director. The JCBA is a 1500-member professional organization with its office located in Overland Park, Kansas. The Executive Director serves the Board of Directors and membership of the JCBA, is a prominent representative of the organization, and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Strong budgeting and financial operations skills required; proficiency with QuickBooks preferred.
- Experience working with executive leadership, such as board of directors, including running meetings, organizing schedules, etc. preferred.
- Experience with event/program development and planning, including event budgeting preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, public speaking, public relations and conflict management skills, including ability to communicate effectively with a broad constituency.
- Proficiency in communicating via various forms of technology including electronic newsletters, websites, e-blasts, electronic registrations, etc.
- Proficiency with association management software, including Growthzone management software, preferred.
Duties
Leadership and Operational Management
- Represent the JCBA to the membership, other bar-related entities, the judicial system, the legislature, civic organizations, and the general public at a wide range of meetings and functions.
- Provide leadership, direction, and vision to governing boards, committees, and sections of the organizations, while participating in the planning and development of a vision and strategic plan for the organization to accomplish its mission and goals.
- Develop board agendas, working closely with board officers, committee chairs and members to identify topics affecting the organizations, respond to requests from outside groups, and report fully the status of programs and operations of the organizations.
- Responsible for keeping accurate board minutes and providing relevant handouts and budgets at board meetings.
- Anticipate trends and developments in the profession, non-profit organizations, and association management to ensure effective overall operational and administrative management of the organizations and various components.
- Develop and maintain effective communication and foster teamwork between the Board of Directors, volunteers, members and staff of the organizations.
- Plan and execute organization events throughout the year, to include Bench/Bar, Court Appreciation, socials, luncheons/breakfasts, etc.
- Develop and manage appropriate marketing initiatives and promotion of programs and services of the organizations, with the goal of furthering the mission of the organizations and improving the perception, image and overall understanding of the law and the profession, including maintaining website and improving the social media presence of the organizations.
- Participate in efforts to increase membership, expand member benefits, and promote professional and social events for members and potential members.
- Serve as Editor-in-Chief of a bi-monthly publication to membership with relevant content and advertising.
- Perform other duties as imposed by the bylaws of the organizations, or as otherwise directed by the board.
Financial Planning and Management
- Assure the fiscal integrity and sound financial management of the organization.
- Prepare annual budget for board approval, maintain accurate financial records, and supervise fiscal and budgetary matters, with the assistance of the Secretary/Treasurer of each board and within the parameters approved by the board.
- Review and post all payments, deposits, and entry into appropriate budget line.
- Work closely with the certified public accountant for the organization to ensure payroll, quarterly taxes and annual filings are completed in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance of all policies and bylaws by the board, staff and committees.
- Maintain and develop business partnerships with outside entities
Section, Committee and Program Volunteer Recruitment and Management
- Coordinate support for the organizations’ committees and sections, ensuring every effort is made to include representation and volunteer service of the diverse membership in all activities, committees, programs and leadership.
- Coordinate all aspects of Continuing Legal Education programming, with the assistance of committee and sections, by maintaining awareness of national trends, innovative programs of other entities, and provide board, committees and sections with appropriate resources and ideas for CLE seminars.
Supervision of Staff
- Recruit, onboard, and otherwise manage any staff of JCBA
- Recommend any personnel action to the board
- Manage the duties of the organizations' personnel, supervise, and evaluate their performance, as well as assign and delegate their responsibilities.
Work Hours
Hybrid work available. Position will require occasional hosting of early morning and evening events.
