POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Finance is responsible for managing and ensuring the financial health and safety of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, Zoological District and Zoo Foundation, including budgetary control, financial reporting, project management and various other financial functions. This position is also responsible for overseeing the operation of the finance, cash control and IT departments, with direct supervision of the controller and IT manager.

Responsible for managing and maintaining budgetary control, including:
- Collaborating with leadership team to oversee the preparation and establishment of the annual operating and capital budgets within Board of Directors’ guidelines, as well as communicating the assumptions used in budget development.
- Providing timely and meaningful information to management regarding status of actual activities as compared to departmental budget throughout the year.
- Working with management team to ensure results of activities are within budget and remain solvent.
- Providing projections throughout the year with assistance from the management team.
- Presenting potential solutions to executive leadership if deficits arise.
- Maintaining and furnishing various internal and external financial reports, as necessary.
- Developing and implementing finance/accounting departmental policies, procedures and internal controls, in conjunction with department heads and senior leadership.

Oversees various accounting, financial reporting and IT projects, including:
- Monitoring monthly financial statements and reporting variances/trends to CEO and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Facilitating annual financial audits and tax preparation, including financial statement audits, 401k audit and worker’s comp audit, in coordination with the Controller.
- Assisting with maintaining various financial records and systems, ensuring all are in accordance with standard accounting principles and procedures.
- Project management for IT endeavors.
- Assisting the HR department in the research, solicitation, and administration of benefits funding and all related retirement plans and programs.
- Managing the relationship with the Zoo entities’ property/casualty insurance broker and ensuring all Zoo entities have appropriate levels of coverage.

Directs the overall management of Finance and IT departments, including:
- Hiring, scheduling, coaching, and evaluation of direct reports.
- Ensuring proper training, development, and policy compliance for department employees.
- Overseeing and ensuring fair and consistent evaluation/coaching across area departments.
- Helping to develop and oversee the operating budget for area departments.

Performs various treasury related duties, including:
- Identifying requirements for external financing, while maintaining working relationships with financial lending institutions.
- Managing cash position of the Zoo entities to ensure efficient use of financial resources.
- Monitoring investments of the Endowment Fund and working with outside consultants to report results to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.

Assists with the development and implementation of company-wide strategic initiatives, including:
- Developing, implementing, and modifying strategic plans for overseen departments.
- Working with other department directors to ensure overall Zoo & Aquarium goals and strategies are being met.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA License required.
- EXPERIENCE:
- At least 10 years’ experience and progressive responsibility in finance/accounting or related field required.
- Previous management level experience preferred.
- Comprehensive and working knowledge of financial management and accounting concepts and principles.
- Prior experience with non-profit industry preferred.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, preferred.
- Experience with SAGE Intacct and other financial/accounting software preferred.
- Experience with Paycor or other payroll software preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Regular TB testing required.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule as business needs dictate, which could include occasional weekend, evening, and holiday hours, in all weather extremes.
- Must pass a background and drug screening.
