Financial Accountant - Reporting & Stakeholder Relations

The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is seeking an accounting professional with a strong background in preparing financial statements and supporting organizational financial operations. This full-time, exempt role will make a meaningful impact by supporting our mission and working with a dedicated, collaborative team to prepare and analyze financial statements, manage tax filings, and serve as a primary financial contact for supporting organizations and donors.

This reports to the Director of the Controller’s Office, works from the Kansas City, MO office and requires some travel around the metro area. There may be an ability to work remotely after a successful training period.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare, analyze, and distribute periodic financial statements for supporting organizations, funds, and private foundations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. 
  • Accounting Operations: Support the monthly close process, maintain accuracy across financial systems, and oversee reconciliation of cash accounts. 
  • Tax Filing Coordination: Prepare work papers for IRS Form 990 and other tax filings, coordinating with internal and external parties to ensure timely and accurate submissions. 
  • Stakeholder Financial Support: Serve as the primary financial contact for supporting organizations and key partners, delivering clear and timely financial data and reports. 
  • Board & Leadership Reporting: Present financial reports at board meetings and to leadership, translating complex financial information into actionable insights. 
  • Donor & Partner Communication: Respond to donor and partner inquiries regarding financial reports and transactions with professionalism and clarity. 
  • Compliance & Process Improvement: Assist with compliance activities and identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, data analytics, or a related field required; CPA preferred. 
  • Experience: At least 3 years of significant experience in accounting operations and financial statement preparation, ideally in a nonprofit or foundation environment. 
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including Power Query, pivot tables, and formulas) and the ability to quickly learn new software and systems. 
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Analytical Ability: Skilled at interpreting complex instructions and documentation, solving problems, and drawing valid conclusions. 
  • Collaboration & Initiative: Able to work both independently and collaboratively, respond effectively to sensitive inquiries, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Transportation: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for occasional work-related travel. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to work regularly at a computer in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Able to work in an office with moderate noise levels and communicate detailed information effectively.
