Our mission is to create pathways for recently incarcerated people to overcome reentry barriers and live fulfilling lives.
As a Live-In Peer Support Specialist in our women's residences, your personal journey with incarceration and recovery becomes a powerful tool for others on a similar path. By sharing your lived experiences, you’ll foster trust, provide guidance, and inspire hope for lasting change.
Journey to New Life is dedicated to supporting your growth as well; within your first month, we’ll provide Certified Peer Support (CPS) training to enhance your skills and deepen your impact. Join us in creating a community where second chances lead to renewed purpose and opportunity.
Residence Well-Being: Peer Advocates build positive mentoring relationships with residents. The foundation of this relationship is trust, which requires staff to ensure the resident’s confidentiality and safety. They are an active presence in the house, making themselves available to residents for emotional support. Peer Advocates should collaborate with the Case Manager to help residents achieve their goals and access services.?
Peer Support Services: Peer Advocates provide recovery support to clients by setting a positive example, helping residents set and achieve their recovery goals, and encouraging them to attend recovery meetings and social events. They facilitate access to local community-based resources as needed. Peer Advocates complete Peer Support training and maintain their credentials through continuing education.
Oversee Daily Operations: Peer Advocates ensure that the household is running smoothly while on shift. This includes overseeing chores and meals, preparing the space for new residents, ensuring there is enough food for residents and that it is properly stored, managing the petty cash, overseeing donations, etc.
Professionalism: Peer Advocates communicate well with coworkers and residents. They respond to their voicemails, texts, emails, and messages in Teams each day they are on shift. While on shift they maintain an active presence in the house and are always available to the residents. If they are out running errands or taking a client to an appointment, they should let the residents know the time they expect to be back at the house. When there is an issue with a resident, they address it in private, showing them respect and protecting their confidentiality. Peer Advocates should set healthy boundaries with residents.
Community Building: Peer Advocates actively work to build community in the house through social events, activities at house meetings, celebrating holidays, etc. Each Peer Advocate should lead at least one social event in their house per month. Each Sunday they will lead the House Meeting, facilitate the recovery group, as well as plan and attend Family Night.
Teamwork: Peer Advocates work collectively with each other, the Case Managers, the Residence Coordinator, the Residence Director, other staff at JTNL and community partners. It is important that they work well with others, communicate clearly, and take on a fair share of the workload.
Facility Safety and Maintenance: Peer Advocates assist with the coordination of property safety and upkeep to ensure there is a safe environment for residents. This includes performing a perimeter safety check each shift, reporting needed repairs, and assisting with the coordination of property upkeep including landscaping, snow removal, pest control, etc.
